Oracle Forms Crash during launch – Browser disappears

This happened to me a week ago. After successful login into the 11i Oracle Applications e-business suite, when I click on the menu to launch the forms, the browser crashes. We were at the end of a major upgrade and the first thought was whether the upgrade had changed anything. But when the issue was pinned to its cause, there was no mystery left.

Problem:

After clicking on any menu link to launch the forms like below, the browser disappears.

There is no error reported anywhere. I was using Internet Explorer 7 (IE7) when I had this issue. But I found out later that this issue would repeat for any version of IE. The error also accompanies with a message sometimes:

Internet Explorer has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience.

Cause:

The MOS note 430359.1 says:

The problem can have various causes but generally is caused by incompatibilities between shared DLL’s

The likely cause of the issue is an incompatibility between Oracle Jinitiator and a 3rd-party browser extension. You can test this by disabling 3rd-party browser extensions as follows:

Navigate IE – Tools – Internet Options – Advanced – untick ‘enable third-party browser extensions

Or we can find out which third-party is actually causing this issue too. Per Metalink note: 430359.1 (Internet Explorer Crashes When Forms Is Launched), there are a few 3rd party browser extensions that conflicts with Jinitiator. For ex., Windows Live Toolbar, Windows Live Toolbar Helper, Windows Live Messenger, McAfee Site Advisor.

Tools -> Internet Options -> Programs

In my case, I had to disable Windows Live Sign-in Control and Windows Live Sign-in Helper.

These add-ons had come with the installation of Windows Live Writer on my laptop.

This issue does not occur if the application environment has Sun JRE installed.

  2. Hi,

This issue does occur when you have SUN JRE installed as im getting the same issue even without any add ons enabled.

IE still shuts down all the time when lauching. Have nearly given up hope on this now.

    Any more ideas?

  3. @Coops –
    Interesting!
Since when does this issue occur?
Did you ever launch any Sun JRE e-biz application successfully on your machine?
Do you remember any recent software/application install on your machine?
Does this happen in only your machine? (and not in your friends’ machines around you?)

Let me know more information. I may help you out.

  4. Hi,
It happened to me around 2 weeks before, the change in my machine was ,ASK tool bar was installed when installed google desktop, IE doesnt like any tool bars to be installed for making the application work as it is suppose to,
After de-installing the Tool bar, it worked great.

    Thanks
    Pavan

  5. You are right, Pavan. The problem most often is with some recent install that needs to be either un-installed or disabled. I chose to disable my Windows Live when this issue occurred.
Interesting fact is that this error didn’t show up when I used Sun JRE. Let me know if you get a chance to try that out.

    Thanks for reading the post.

  6. Hi Vikram,

This only seems to be an issue with the laptop I am using. Dont believe any applications / programs are causing the issue as i have removed a number of possibilities and also disabled all the known Add-Ins.

Have tried over-writing the .dll file with a later version – still no joy.

Tried also disabling the Windows Live service and still no joy

  7. @Coops,

Yours seems to be a different issue than what I had encountered. Remember the note 430359.1 mentions the issue is mostly when there is a new installation or an upgrade of an application but cleverly adds that this may not always be the case.
Checking carefully the browser error report may help. I can check it for you if its alright.
Additionally, you should also try other browsers: Mozilla, Chrome etc.

  8. Cheers for the response Vikram,

I have tried Mozilla, (No Joy at all) same issue. I managed to get it to work on Netscape but thats not the best solution.

If you let me know what you need from IE I can see if I can get you the file, once again appreciate the response and time.

    Cheers

  9. @Coops,
To begin with, i need to know if there is any error message or a pop-out window that warns you that the browser is closing. If yes, there should be an accompanying button to it that asks you to send error report to Microsoft. Click on that button to generate the technical report. The window should tell you where the files are getting stored. That technical information precisely tells you which dll is conflicting with the application. I can help you review the report.

On the other hand, is it possible for you to de-install and re-install the IE browser on your machine? This sometimes helps.
